Only use 1st gear for starting the race. Guys racing H1s and H2s did, not the guys racing R5s and RDs. I HAVE HAD AN 1971 YAMAHA ...HI, MY NAME IS FRANKIE. I HAVE HAD AN 1971 YAMAHA R5 FOR A COUPLE YEARS NOW AND HAVE BEEN WORKING ON IT AS A PROJECT.
